Will someone ask the child standing outside to come in?

His face sad and forlorn...his knees rough and bruised
His eyes red and wet...his shoulders slumped and humble
What did he do that was so wrong?

A caterpillar came along
And asked him what was the matter
He could only mutter out a short answer
"I don't belong"
The caterpillar too became sad
Because he too never belonged
There the both of them sat
Feeling so sad and lost

Then came a snake
Who asked them both what was the matter
Both only muttered out the same answer
"We don't belong"
The snake suddenly realized
That he had been alone all this time
Slithering up a nearby branch
He sat there singing a sad sad song

Finally came a squirrel
Who heard the snake's song
She asked them all what was the matter
All answered "We don't belong"
The squirrel fluffed her bushy tail
And gnawed on her acorn
Before answering them with
"What do you mean you don't belong?"
"There you sit with little friends around
and you still say you don't belong?"
The three of them looked at each other
They realized...they had been together all evening
They smiled and thanked the squirrel
And sang a very different song!
